Sauk Rapids Police Department Partners with ARXG for 29th National Take Back Day

[Sauk Rapids, Minnesota] — ARXG has donated two steel, vinyl-wrapped drop boxes to the Sauk Rapids Police Department to expand safe disposal options for residents. One unit accepts unwanted or expired prescription medications, and the other accepts sharps (needles and syringes). A ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of these community drop boxes will be held on Monday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sauk Rapids Police Department.

The donated units were provided by ARXG in September and are located at the Sauk Rapids Police Department, where they will be available to the public Monday thru Friday, from 8 a.m – 4:30 p.m.. In addition to donating the boxes themselves, ARXG is covering the cost of shipment and destruction for the materials collected in the units, simplifying disposal for the department and the community.

Unused prescription medications and improperly discarded sharps present public-health and safety challenges. Leftover medications can be diverted, misused, or accidentally ingested, while discarded sharps in household trash or public places put sanitation workers, first responders and community members at risk of needlestick injury and potential infection. The Sauk Rapids Police Department has been collecting roughly 1,000 pounds of prescription medication annually and has previously shouldered the expense and logistics of securely storing and transporting those materials to destruction facilities. ARXG’s removable inner-liner system allows collected materials to be sealed and mailed for certified destruction, reducing the department’s storage burden and handling costs. The sharps unit fills a disposal gap that previously did not exist in the community.

“We’re proud to support Sauk Rapids with these community collection units,” said Anthony Apitz, Facility Manager at ARXG. “Donating these makes it easier for residents to dispose of medications and sharps safely and responsibly. For us, this is a practical step that protects our home community. The drop boxes will keep hazardous materials out of the waste stream and help prevent accidental exposure or misuse.”

Residents are also encouraged to participate in DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sauk Rapids Government Center. This one-day event, hosted locally by the Sauk Rapids Police Department with ARXG’s support, provides another opportunity to clear out unwanted medications safely.
